YSI Project 2010-2011, Be True, Be You!

April 8th, 2011

The aim of our project is to raise awareness about the promotion of positive body image and bring attention to the fact that it affects so many young people, especially girls.

During the year we conducted a survey in our school that asked students if they wore make up and why. We found out that most people wear make up because they feel self-concious.

In February, we invited a guest speaker from Bodywhys – The Eating Disorder Association of Ireland, to talk to us about eating disorders and photo-shopping. We discovered how misleading photo-shopping is and how pervasive it is in the media.

“71.4% of Irish adolescents feel adversly affected by media portrayal of body weight and shape.” – Bodywhys.

We held a poster competition for first year students, with the help of SPHE teachers, asking them to design a poster regarding the aim of our project “Be True, Be You.

It was a great success. We are grateful to our local pharmacies in Carlow who helped to sponsor us.The pharmacies include:

  • White’s Pharmacy.
  • Uni-care.
  • Sam McCauleys, Carlow Shopping Centre
  • Kelly’s Pharmacy.

On Wednesday the 30th of March, we attended the regional speakout in The Green Isle Hotel, Dublin. It was an eye opener to see other schools and how they dealt with their social issues. This was an exciting experience for us to be able to express our view regarding positive body image.
