Review of the Year 2009-2010

July 1st, 2010

Review of the Year (2009/2010)

Looking back since last September we are reminded of the various activities undertaken by St. Leo’s Parent’s Association.  Following an invitation at the beginning of the year to all parents/guardians to get involved, a great response was received, resulting in a committee numbering 48 members for the academic year 2009/2010.  It is wonderful to see such interest in the Parent’s Association and it was a sign of great encouragement for all school partners in these difficult economic times.

In an effort to build connections with others working within our school community the first meeting witnessed the introduction of Parent Association members to the new Board of Management over a cup of tea, followed the next month by introductions and dialogue with the Student Council on their various activities.

Throughout the year members assisted at various events such as the Open Evening, the inaugural Catherine McCauley Annual Lecture, the Transition Year show and at the incoming first year assessment exams.

In an effort to promote more social (rather than fundraising) events the committee organised a “Mother & Daughter Beauty Evening” for Transition year and LCA students.  Feedback from this event was very positive from both mothers and daughters and the concept was appreciated and bound to become an annual event.

Fundraising as always is an integral part of the Parent Association’s activities and in undertaking this year’s fund raising drive the Committee decided that this year they would like to target a specific project.  Following consultation with all parties it was decided that purchasing a School Bus would be this year’s objective and with this in mind they undertook an Easter Draw which raised just under €10,000 – A great result in recessionary times.

They also had a formal “Bus Launch” night out which had a dual purpose of being social occasion for staff and parents to meet over some cheese & wine while raising some additional funds.  Various other activities have also been undertaken to help meet this project’s target and we hope to be on the bus in September!  Of course apart from raising funds they were delighted to be in a position to once again sponsor the Kidnap Mystery week, organised by the staff, which has become a popular in-house event in recent years.

Just before breaking for the Summer the Committee targeted holding a Fashion Show next November, again with a dual purpose of being a fundraising/social evening, and so work is underway to ensure that this event will be a successful one socially and financially.
